It seems that Facial recognition vending machines are having some hiccups in becoming the preferred system for stopping minors from buying cigarettes in Japan as the video reveals

Another system currently in use is Taspo based on an IC card . The cards are embedded with an IC chip and can store credit so users can buy cigarettes without cash.

The card doesn't have to be inserted into a vending machine, it only has to be scanned.

Aimed at reducing underage smokers, those under 20 years of age all cigarette vending machines have been fitted with the software and reader that allows Taspo to operate. Smokers must apply for a card and then they are free to use the card at any vending machine.
