Japanese customers line up for the new Apple iPad

Japanese customers lined up in anticipation of the launch of the new Apple iPad. The interest was a lot more than the launch of the iPhone in Japan. The details of the prices & contracts for Japanese customers can be found here.

We believe the iPad will have a tremendous influence on Japan in the near future for a number of reasons.

1. The iPad delivers features & technology in a simple format that has global appeal.

2. It incorporates applications & thinking which are innovative from the users experience.

3. International products do have an audience in Japan.

4. The use of the product will spurn many new industries for example: rental businesses for tourists who can use an iPad as a travel partner. They can watch videos, search the web, look up facts, translate and get a more personal travel experience which is customized to their needs. The Apple iPad allows the Internet to be a useful travel accessory that a phone cannot, due to its limited size. We hope to see iPads for rental at all airports in Japan soon.

5. It will spur competition in this market segment

Japanese Marketing expanding in Asia - China

Japanese companies are expanding their marketing in China as they look for more growth opportunities. Leading Japanese retailer UniQlo has a presence in China as does convenience store chain Family Mart but a wider array of businesses are looking to take their successful formulas and to gain new customers in China.

A journal article about Japanese marketing in China by S. A. Horn, titled "Product adoption and innovation diffusion: the case of Japanese marketing to China" further details this growing trend and provides a range of examples and insights.

Abstract

"Along with the growing prominence of China in corporate strategy and decision-taking, Japanese firms are increasingly aligning their activities to accommodate the shift towards a customer-led market environment and the advent of a major consumer market on Japan's doorstep. This study shows how Japanese firms adjust their marketing to changes in Chinese consumption patterns and address the impact of geographical and socioeconomic variables on innovation diffusion. By taking a fresh look at the marketing challenges amidst latent consumer ethnocentrism and cosmopolitanism, this study generates fresh insights into the reconfiguration of Japanese marketing and retailing activities in this emergent market."

Japanese Marketing - Qr Codes - What are they and how are they used by Japanese customers in Japan

Copyright JapaneseCustomer.2010. All Rights Reserved.

QR codes are an important part of Japanese Marketing that allow Japanese customers to access websites quickly and directly by mobile phone. For example: when you commute by train in Japan, many advertisers on trains include QR codes on their in train ads and a commuter who is standing in the train can easily scan the code on the ad with their mobile phone and be taken directly to the advertisers website without typing in a URL.It is quick, simple and convenient.

Local community magazines in Japan which are delivered to all households in an area each month, provide a range of advertisers for local services and businesses. Each business that advertisers in the magazine which is freely distributed, has a QR code under their advertisement and it is rare not to have a QR code as competition is so fierce.

QR codes are also known as two dimensional barcodes.

What is Japanese Marketing - What is it and why is it important in 2010

Photo: Japanese technology - Washlet toilet

What is Japanese Marketing?

Japanese Marketing can be described in three ways. Firstly, it is how Japanese companies market their products and services to Japanese in Japan, secondly , Japanese marketing can be seen as how Japanese market products and services to foreigners in Japan, thirdly, how Japanese market their products and services to to other Asian customers and finally, how Japanese convey their their ideas, products, services and culture to the world.

Why is Japanese Marketing important?

Japanese marketing is important as it involves a large area, involves millions of people, and is not documented like American Marketing.

Asia accounts for over 50% of world GDP and yet the world's knowledge of Asia is limited. Japan is the largest economy in Asia and trades with many countries within Asia and the world.

Japanese marketing techniques are different to American marketing techniques. In fact so different that many western marketing theories just don't attract, manage or retain Asian and non Asian customers.

So that in itself is a reason to learn how countries like Japan communicate with their wide array of customers.

What is Japanese customer service, how is it different & why is it important?

By JapaneseCustomer.com

Japanese Customer Service - What is it?

Japanese customer service is a type of customer service that is based on Asian philosophies with a uniquely Japan touch. Customer service aims to make the customer feel important, special and to visit a business repeatedly while their needs are being met. If service is poor or the customer doesn't feel they are getting the attention they deserve, they often vote with their feet & change providers. Japanese customer service is a type of service that has developed in Japan for Japanese customers & aims to meet the range of needs that Japanese customers have. It is unique to Japan but is available to all who visit or live in Japan. As it is culturally based it may not be exportable to other countries nor may it work in other countries. Japanese customer service is based on the same values and ethics as regular customer service but it seems to go that extra step further based on what Japanese culture dictates. Remember that even though we talk about Japanese customer service some companies do it very well and some companies don't do it so well. In essence we are talking about the topic of Japanese customer service not about individual companies. Let's be clear, not all Japanese companies provide good customer service but we believe that for those that do it well there is something for us to learn, share & investigate further.

Japanese Customer Service - How is it different?

Japanese customer service is different to western customer service in a number of ways. Firstly,
service providers in Japan try to anticipate customer needs. For example: On a wet day stores will provide plastic umbrella covers outside so as to allow customers to enter the store with their umbrella. Small touch but big impact. Good for the customer as they can quickly enter the store with their umbrella. It is good for the store as it stops the floor from getting wet, reduces congestion at entrances and accidents. Secondly, Japan is a group centred culture and for a business to have a good reputation means that they have to work hard to gain " good word of mouth" from happy & satisfied customers. There are many businesses in Japan and customers are often spoilt for choice, so it is easy for them to change their preference to another supplier easily. Bad word of mouth can often spread quickly and tarnish a firms reputation a lot quicker and with greater impact than maybe found in other cultures. Thirdly, hierarchy plays an important place in social order in Japan and customers have their own important place in it. A status different than found in western culture. Businesses in Japan have a duty deeper than law to meet their customers needs. Why? Well often a business is set up in a neighbourhood and has lots of local customers. The business is part of the community and benefits from its customers patronage so they have an unspoken duty to support and help them. It should be noted that typical Japanese businesses may have been run for hundreds of years by the same family and continue being run by family members. Finally, Japanese customer service is pre-dominantly about people to people interaction. For example: Many Japanese businesses prefer to answer their own calls and not rely on automated technology as they know Japanese customers typically wont leave messages on answering machines. Some insurance sales people visit a customers house in person when they make a claim and personally complete the paperwork directly within hours of receiving their phone call. Car dealer staff personally visit a customers house when their car needs to be repaired and return it on completion. Telephoning them at each step of the process to explain, get their approval and keep them informed. At McDonalds in Japan staff will typically peel the paper wrapper off a straw and place it in the drink for you, so as to save you time.

Japanese Customer Service - Why is it important?

Japanese customer service is important in business as it provides a key as to how to meet the needs of Asian customers. Typically western customer service techniques often just don't match or meet the needs of Asian customers. Japanese customer service provides a cultural base from which to better understand Asian customers and how to meet their needs. Western businesses have many new opportunities for doing business in Asia. As Asia develops the ability to understand and meet the needs of Asian customers will also grow. Japanese customer service is an important topic for discussion, investigation, study and research.A starting point for better understanding the new Asian customer.

Key questions for the future of business education include: How to train staff in Asian culture & philosophies, How to teach Asian languages to graduates, middle and senior managers, How to have staff study, live & work in Asia and how to incorporate Asian techniques into Western thinking, management and practice?
