Japanese customers see Japanese manufacturers rush to Asia for lower costs - wages in Thailand up to one fifth of Japan

"The trend toward more production in Asia has further accelerated in recent months due to the steep appreciation of the yen as manufacturers scramble to take advantage of lower labor costs and greatly improved manufacturing skills in Asian countries such as Thailand, whose wages are about one-fifth of those in Japan."
