Japanese Customer: Gender differences between Japanese students studying in Australia - what does it mean?

According to the latest research snapshot, number 14, September 2006 from AEI International, female Japanese student numbers are nearly double that of male Japanese students. Female Japanese students represent the largest population of women studying in Australian education as international customers at 65.7%. Japanese male student numbers represent the smallest number of male students from the top ten source countries surveyed at 34.3%. Japanese students as a segment represented only 5.46% of all international students studying in Australia. Yet are an important market as Japanese students influence the buyer behaviour of other north Asian students, have a high desire for English and tertiary study.




The gender differences need further investigation as it may lead to a better understanding of the market. What are some of the reasons for this? What can be done to change this? Is this imbalance effecting the total number of Japanese students studying in Australia? What are the different motivators for male and female students?

Foreign tourists in Japan spend the most in Shinjuku according to survey

"Twenty-three percent of tourists said they spent the most money in Shinjuku, according to a survey by Life Pepper, a digital marketing firm in Tokyo. The Akihabara area, known for its electronics stores, came in next at 14%, while the upscale Ginza shopping district took third place with 13%."

Where to see Hanami in Tokyo? Try Ueno Park

If you get a chance to visit Tokyo in late March early April, Ueno Park is a great place to see Japanese hanami. There are approximately 1200 cherry trees in Ueno Park and these were said to have been planted in the Edo period (1603 to 1868) .

As soon as you enter the park you will see blooming cherry trees, the middle of the park has a main road and either side of this are said to be the best places to sit and enjoy the blossom.

Hint: from around the 20th of March until the 4th April, the park is very busy so it pays to plan your trip. Many companies hold their annual hanami party in the park and send new recruits to visit the park, mark a spot, mark it with cardboard, a plastic sheet or rope and to sit and guard it until the party begins, sometimes they stay for days and sleep on the spot.

Early morning is probably the best time to visit before the crowds begin to get large around lunch time and again in the evening when most companies visit.

You can catch the train to Ueno and walk a few minutes, the park is located very close and there is no admission fee.

While at the park you can also enjoy:

Lean. The new western buzzword that borrows from the Japanese word "mottainai", no waste. But lean is more than just a word in Japan it is a mindset that impacts every aspect of daily life not just manufacturing or business. It applies from when you sit down to breakfast and leave your rice bowl with three grains of rice in it and someone at the table will inspect (probably everyone at the table) and someone will say to you directly, finish all your rice "mottainai". It continues when you throw out the waste paper basket and other household members will inspect the contents and take out things they can use and will say to you "mottainai". 

When you finish taking a bath in Japan at the end of the day which you share with all the other members of the household.You have to get in and out quickly and replace the bath covers (boards that cover the bath and keep in the heat in) so the next person also enjoys a hot bath, "mottainai". 

Bath water in Japan is typically used for up to three consecutive days before the bath is cleaned. The water in the bath is used in the washing machine, "mottainai". Nearly all Japanese households have a pump and a hose unit . This unit takes the bath water and fills the washing machine with a push of a button. Bath water is recycled, "mottainai". 

So you may now be getting a picture of how deep the meaning of "mottainai" or lean thinking goes in daily Japanese life. 

Japanese do not just apply this concept to manufacturing and business , they apply it to everything! 

For western companies to really compete with Japan they must not only understand the concept but apply it and Japan has a thousand year head start.
